As we head into March of 2019, New York Knicks fans everywhere are beginning to have flashbacks to 1985. In 1985, the Knicks fortunes were turned as the franchise drafted the man who was asked to bring basketball back to NYC, Patrick Ewing. Since ’85, the Knicks have not experienced a draft with the implications that this 2019 draft has to offer. Currently, New York sits at 13-48 positioning themselves to have a top 3 pick in the upcoming draft featuring Zion Williamson from Duke University. It almost seems destined for Zion to end up in the Big Apple. He has Patrick Ewing’s strength and grit, with a higher vertical than Russell Westbrook, all bottled up into a 6’7″ 285 lbs. frame. This man is exactly what the Knicks need to save the franchise.
Zion would absolutely thrive under New York’s head coach David Fizdale and here’s why. In high school and college, teams can play zone and man-to-man with TONS of help-side, because not every player on the court is a scoring threat from the perimeter. This style of defense does not work in NBA with rules like the defensive 3-second rule, and the restricted area under the rim. Another reason defenses with a ton of help-side does not work in the modern NBA is because nearly every player is a perimeter scoring threat. So, sit back, close your eyes, and imagine Zion Williamson isolated on the wing 1-on-1… pick your poison! Does the defense help over and allow the able and willing passer in Zion to have 10+ assists a game, or let the man guarding him end up on Zion’s next poster? Point being, Zion will immediately impact the Knicks playoff chances the very second he steps foot on the floor.
Luckily for New York Fans, Zion is not the only prized possession in this years draft! This draft class is absolutely loaded with premier talent like RJ Barrett, Cam Reddish, Ja Morant, Darius Garland, and many others. With players of this caliber in the draft, the Knicks will likely receive many trade proposals for their pick as well. Possible teams to keep an eye on trading for the pick include; the Pelicans looking to deal Anthony Davis, the Celtics looking to shake up an under-performing talented loaded roster, and the LA Clippers.
Isn’t it great to be a fan of the Knicks? The team can literally have the worst record in the NBA and still sell out arenas every night, and steal the media spotlight. Just wait until the fans really have something to talk about… and I’m hoping that something is the new and improved Lob City 2.0 featuring Zion, Dennis Smith Jr., DeAndre Jordan, and Mitchell Robinson!
