Titans Talk: Needs Outweigh Best Player Available?

In a perfect world, NFL teams would love to be in a situation to draft the best player available. The best teams usually do. They have few if any glaring needs, eliminating the reach picks that can and will get GM’s fired. Is a back to back 9-7 Tennessee Titans finally to that level yet? Let’s take a look.

With the off-season additions of Roger Saffold, Cameron Wake, and Adam Humphries the Titans moved closer towards closing a few holes. With guard, possibly center and someone younger at edge rusher to soak up Wake’s experience, there is talent abound in the draft. But what if one of the bigger names start to tumble? Or the run in one position happens and a top talent slides right to you. Here are a few positions that are in good shape and the players that may slide:

Inside linebacker: Devin Bush

The other Devin should be long gone by nineteen as should Bush but in the event that he slides, here is a chance to eventually replace the ageless Wesley Woodyard. Would the Titans pull the trigger on a position that most people would say is good? He is probably the best blitzing inside backer in the draft as was our 2018 first rounder was in Rashaan Evans. Coach Pees and Coach Vrabel love the flexibility at the inside spot but I think they would pass even though some scouts in the room would be jumping on the table for the player.

Cornerback: Greedy Williams

The Titans have a lot of salary cap committed to this position. They also are deep in bodies and game experience. Will the Titans get Greedy and grab him? It’s possible but not probable. The Titans will add a corner in this draft as they always seem to do every year but I don’t think at nineteen.

Wide receiver: D.K. Metcalf

The man was a combine phenom in some tests and less like Superman in others. Would other teams ahead of the Titans let him slide down to nineteen? It’s possible and if that happens after a deep pause, I see them waiting for the phone to ring and get out of the pick.

So as the winds of winter start to die off and spring begins, the smokescreens from teams start to rise, leaving NFL fans questioning if the best player available on their favorite teams draft board could also fill the need.
