Sure it was ugly, sure they got outplayed, sure they deserved the win but none of that matters because Colombia has advanced to the quarterfinals of the U-20 World Cup. Colombia overcame sloppy play and defensive lapses to beat New Zealand 5-4 on penalties after both teams were tied up one apiece after regulation and thirty minutes of extra time.

Doubt has set in after José Pékerman’s resignation, and now mix that in with aging stars Cristián Zapata, David Ospina, Juan Cuadrado, and Radamel Falcao the consensus was that the golden age of Colombian soccer was over. Colombia’s U-20 team is proving that it is not the case as rising stars Andrés Reyes, Iván Angulo, Cucho Hernández, Luis Sinisterra, Kevin Mier, and Liverpool’s Anderson Arroyo have continued to shine but more importantly win. Colombia’s U-20 will continue their world cup run as they will take on the winner of Ukraine/Panama Friday, June 7th at 9:30 AM est.
